MEET DR. KEWITT
Thank you for taking the time to visit our website. I would like to offer you some background information about me, my education, surgical training, and practice.
I grew up in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania where I was fortunate to have a large, close, loving family and a lot of good friends. From an early age, with the nurturing of my father, I developed a love and appreciation for Pennsylvania’s woods. The mountains and seasons of central Pennsylvania bless us with some of the most beautiful surroundings in the world.
Growing up in Wellsboro, I enjoyed all the pleasures and privileges that came with living in a small country town. I was given the opportunity to be a kid; spending my days hiking, riding bikes, playing army and kick the can, and building dames in creeks. My father practiced dentistry in Wellsboro for thirty years.
He was an important role model in my life, showing me the importance of balancing work and family. I graduated from Wellsboro High School (Go Green Hornets!) in 1998 and began my undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh. While there, I spent a season competing in the high jump on the track team before I stopped to focus on my studies. In 1991 I graduated with a bachelor of science in biology and entered Pittsburgh’s dental school in the fall.
Dental school was the best, and the hardest, four years of my academic career. Some of my best friends today are people I met in dental school. I will never forget how nervous I felt when working on that first patient, the amount of responsibility placed on me as a student, and the course material that had to be mastered in four years.
While at dental school, I realized my interest in surgery and, with the encouragement of my father, I entered a medical doctorate integrated oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas Health and Science Center at San Antonio in 1995. Dental school was the best preparation I could have had for medical school. I graduated from medical school with Alpha Omega Alpha honors in 1998.
My residency program included one year of general surgery and extensive anesthesia training. It took place at a level one trauma center that was the primary referral center for complex facial injuries for all of south central Texas. I saw many patients with multi-system trauma that required coordination of care with such services as neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and critical care. The oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas at San Antonio has built a reputation for strong training in orthognathic (jaw repositioning), facial cosmetic, facial reconstructive, and sleep apnea surgery. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons recognize this program as one of the finest and most comprehensive training programs in the country.
On February 24, 2003, I opened my practice, Centre Oral and Facial Surgery, in State College. I am involved in many professional activities and in 2009 was named as a Board Examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
I spend most of my free time with my wife Kristen and son Nicholas. I enjoy outdoor activities, including archery hunting, mountain biking and sporting activities with my son. When Kristen and I get some quite time, we like to relax over good food and wine. I am interested in early American history and model railroads, an interest I enjoyed passing on to my son. When not working or spending time with my family, I enjoy outdoor activities, including archery hunting, turkey hunting, and working around our yard and garden.
